VIENTIANE: The Lao government has urged everyone to celebrate Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) with care, to cut spending and to make fewer journeys, taking the current economic pressures and fuel concerns into account.

The Prime Minister’s Office issued a notice on April 3 calling on ministries and provincial authorities to ensure low-key and safe festivities during the April 13-16 holiday period.

The notice said global and regional circumstances remain complex and volatile, with growing pressure on economies due to the energy crisis and the risk of fuel shortages.

Authorities warned that demand for goods and travel services peaks over Lao New Year, which can strain supply and drive up prices.

To address this, the government urges everyone to reduce their spending, avoid waste, and not make any unnecessary journeys. The notice also encouraged the use of electric vehicles wherever possible to help save fuel.

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and related government bodies were instructed to ensure that enough food and consumer goods are available in all parts of the country.

They were also asked to monitor product quality and control prices, including the cost of transport and entrance fees to tourist attractions, to prevent unjustified increases.

All sectors of government were instructed to ensure peace and order during the holiday. Offices were asked to assign staff to monitor ongoing activities, conduct patrols, and remain on duty throughout the festival.

The Ministry of Public Security will work with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to manage traffic and ensure safe travel.

Public awareness campaigns will be strengthened through television, radio and online channels to promote responsible behaviour and reduce road accidents.

The government also called for action to prevent disorderly gatherings that may cause congestion, while entertainment venues must follow strict opening and closing hours.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and provincial administrations were told to prepare tourist attractions for an influx of visitors and organise suitable venues for celebrations.

The government also stressed the importance of preserving the country’s longstanding traditions and ensuring that visitors understand and respect Laos’ cultural norms. - Vientiane Times/ANN
