LUCENA CITY, Philippines: The local government of Tayabas City in Quezon province has cancelled its Easter Sunday activities under “Tayabasaan 2026” that were to be funded with public money.

In a statement, the City Information and Public Relations Office (CICRO) said the decision came from Mayor Piwa Lim following consultations with the offices concerned.

The cancelled events include a scheduled band concert, which was set to be financed by the mayor, according to CICRO.

“Mayor Piwa Lim and the city government ask for the public’s understanding and cooperation so that, together, the community can overcome challenges and maintain stability and unity amid the global energy crisis,” the statement said.

The message, written in Filipino, was posted on the city’s Facebook page.

CICRO clarified that the cancellation only applies to activities funded or organised by the local government.

Residents are still free to observe the traditional water-dousing on Easter Sunday.

Authorities, however, reminded the public to exercise caution when splashing water on others to avoid accidents or misunderstandings, especially with those who unfamiliar with the tradition.

In previous years, large crowds—mostly youth—gathered at Rizal Park to celebrate “Tayabasaan” with playful water sprays, bubbles, music and street festivities.

Earlier, the nearby town of Lucban also canceled its annual “Buhusan Festival” in support of the declared national energy emergency.

Private celebrations in Lucban, however, may still proceed subject to existing safety regulations.
