MANILA: The film "823 Hostage Crisis", inspired by the real-life Manila hostage incident in 2010, held its premiere screening and press conference recently at TGV Sunway Velocity. Lead actors Tong Bing Yu, Sahronizam Noor, along with Producer-Director Tony Leung, were present to share insights into the production and creative process.

Tong Bing Yu plays survivor Yee Xiao Ling, through whose perspective the story unfolds. The audience is guided step by step into the unfolding crisis — from initial fear and uncertainty to the emotional turmoil and resilience at the edge of life and death. The role is layered with strong emotional intensity.
Tong shared during the press conference that the role was a major challenge. Having not acted for three years following the pandemic, she was also dealing with personal struggles, including her sister’s stroke and her own health issues, which left a visible scar on her face.
“When the producer first approached me, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to return. But the character mirrored my own journey — both physically and emotionally scarred — so I decided to take on the challenge.”
She added that the role required portraying both the raw human response in extreme situations and the strength needed to rebuild oneself after trauma.
“This is not just a crime film — it’s a story about how people face and overcome trauma.”
Tong also revealed that she met the real-life survivor prior to filming to better understand her emotional journey.
“The biggest challenge was that almost every scene required crying. There were days I cried from 5am until 9pm — it felt like releasing three years’ worth of emotions all at once.”

“He is not simply a ‘villain’, but someone who gradually breaks down under pressure and desperation. I did extensive psychological research to understand his motivations.”
He added that maintaining emotional tension throughout filming was particularly demanding.
“The hardest part was controlling the emotional boundary — not too much, not too little. He is dangerous, but he was also a real person.”
He hopes audiences will reflect not only on the conflict, but also on the deeper social issues and human complexities behind it.
Producer-Director Tony Leung shared that the production faced numerous challenges, particularly filming during the pandemic. Strict safety protocols and logistical constraints significantly increased the difficulty of production. Several key scenes were reshot multiple times on location, resulting in higher production costs and delays.
He emphasised: “This film is not just about recreating an real cases, but about reflecting on the consequences of our choices. Every decision in life can lead to unforeseen outcomes, yet we must face them.”
He added that the film centers on themes of forgiveness, understanding, and self-redemption, highlighting hope and resilience even in the darkest moments.
“When we revisited this story, 12 years had passed. Yee Xiao Ling has since overcome her trauma and even served as a consultant for the film. We created this work with respect for the truth, aiming to present a deeply human story.”
