BEIJING: The Chinese embassy in Cambodia has denied reports that its officials recently travelled with the Chinese owner of Heng Fang Hotel to the Thma Da area along the Cambodia-Thailand border, calling the information, shared by Thai media, untrue.

Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin issued the clarification on social media on Friday (Aug 21), after reports circulated claiming that Chinese embassy officials had accompanied the hotel owner to the border area.

“The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia declares that the above report is untrue and has not sent any personnel to the above-mentioned Cambodia-Thailand border area recently,” Wang wrote.

He urged media organisations and the public to carefully verify information before publishing or sharing it.

“We hope relevant media outlets and friends from all walks of life will carefully verify the sources of news and not readily believe or circulate unverified information,” he added.

The clarification comes amid renewed media attention surrounding Heng Fang Hotel and its eponymous Chinese owner, who alleges that Thai troops occupied and looted his property on Cambodian territory in the Thma Da area of Pursat province. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
