PHNOM PENH: The foreign managers of two factories in Kandal and Kampong Speu have been ordered to issue written apologies for misconduct towards their employees, according to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.

In a statement released on Wednesday (Aug 19), the ministry stated that the “inappropriate behaviour” took place yesterday.

The ministry offered no further details of the incidents, nor of the nationalities of the two managers.

Following a complaint by the workers, the ministry examined CCTV footage and interviewed all those involved. The two managers in question confessed that they had behaved inappropriately.

“The ministry requires two foreign managers, one from Justin Allen (Cambodia) Garment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Kandal province and the other from Ming Yang Industry (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. in Kampong Speu province, to publicly apologise to their workers/employees and sign an agreement to end the use of improper language and behaviour which affects the dignity of Cambodian workers,” said the ministry.

The statement warned that if their behaviour is repeated they will face the revocation of their work permits and possible deportation.

The ministry reminded managers, supervisors and interpreters of all businesses operating in the kingdom to respect the code of conduct, culture and traditions of Cambodia and avoid the use of inappropriate language or behaviour in the workplace.

It reminded employees that they can report improper language or behaviour through the ministry’s anonymous online complaint mechanism at https://feedback.mlvt.gov.kh/feedback, or by calling the 1286 hotline. The statement reiterated that the ministry would take action, in accordance with the law.

The Textile, Apparel, Footwear & Travel Goods Association in Cambodia (TAFTAC), supported the measure, issuing a social media statement which called for all foreign managers and employees to respect the good morals, culture, customs, traditions and laws of Cambodia.

TAFTAC urged its members to share the case as a warning “to contribute to maintaining harmonious professional relations in the workplace”. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
