A new Hong Kong film based on the 2010 Manila hostage, also known as the Rizal Park hostage-taking incident, is set for release in May.
Titled Beyond Hostage Crisis, the film is directed by Tony Leung Hung Wah and revisits the aftermath of the 2010 incident, when dismissed police officer Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus at Rizal Park.
The tourist bus was carrying 25 people, consisting of 21 tourists from Hong Kong and four Filipinos. The 12-hour hostage situation stemmed from Mendoza being dismissed from his job in the Philippine National Police (PNP) as he demanded a fair hearing to defend himself.
The crisis ended in a botched rescue operation broadcast live worldwide, leaving eight Hong Kong tourists dead. The gunman also perished in the operation, and nine others were injured, including seven hostages and two bystanders.
Set for release in Hong Kong on May 28, the film is set to explore the emotional toll on survivors and victims’ families. It stars Malaysian actress Fish Liew.

Even before its global release, Beyond Hostage Crisis has sparked debate in Hong Kong, particularly over concerns of “secondary trauma,” or the possibility that dramatising real-life tragedies could retraumatize survivors and audiences.
Others, however, argue that the film serves as an important act of remembrance, especially for younger generations who may not fully understand the scale and impact of the crisis.
