Myanmar Parliament to hold presidential election on April 3

YANGON: The presidential election will be held at the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, Myanmar's national-level bicameral legislature, on April 3, according to an announcement by Speaker Aung Lin Dwe.

During the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw session on April 2, the Speaker presented the findings of the scrutiny committee, which reviewed the three vice presidents nominated by the respective parliamentary groups to assess whether they meet the constitutional qualifications for the presidency.

The Speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw said the scrutiny committee had examined the three vice presidents submitted by the respective parliamentary groups on March 31, 2026,.

Based on the committee’s report, all three nominees were found to meet the qualifications required for the presidency, and the committee members confirmed their eligibility in line with the law and election rules.

The three vice presidents are Senior General Min Aung Hlaing (pic), nominated by elected Pyithu Hluttaw representatives; Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye (Kayin State Hluttaw proportional representation constituency-1), nominated by elected Amyotha Hluttaw representatives; and Nyo Saw (Cocogyun constituency), nominated by Military Hluttaw representatives.

In line with Article 60 (a) and (e) of the Constitution and Section 4 (a) and (e) of the Law on the Election of the President and Vice Presidents, all Pyidaungsu Hluttaw representatives will vote to elect one of the three vice presidents as President.

The Speaker announced that the election will take place on April 3, 2026, in accordance with Article 38 of the same law, and also provided preliminary clarification to Parliament on the secret ballot procedure to be used in the vote. - Eleven Media/ANN
