YANGON: Myanmar and Thailand have discussed speeding up a “U-turn” process that would allow Myanmar workers who have completed four years of employment under Thailand’s labour MoU system to renew their terms and continue working in the country.
Myanmar Labour Minister U Khin Maung Soe and Thai Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat held talks in Bangkok on Aug 25 on issues affecting Myanmar workers, according to Myanmar’s Labour Ministry.
The ministers also discussed compiling data on Myanmar workers by occupation and location, expanding sites issuing Certificates of Identity (CI), and facilitating legal channels for workers to send remittances to their families.
They also discussed ensuring Myanmar workers receive social security benefits in Thailand and negotiating an agreement between the two countries’ social security authorities.
The talks were held on the sidelines of the 29th Asean Labour Ministers’ Meeting and related meetings in Bangkok. - Eleven Media/ANN
