YANGON: Myanmar's Department of Fisheries has banned fishing for three months starting from Wednesday (April 1) during the fish spawning season to protect aquatic resources, state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Wednesday.

The main reason for designating fishing ban periods and zones is to prevent the decline of fish species and to promote the growth of fishery resources, the report said.

"These measures are carried out as a conservation effort during the breeding season when fish reproduce," it said, quoting U Zaw Min Oo, deputy director of the Myeik District Department of Fisheries.

All fishing boats operating in offshore areas are prohibited from fishing during the non-fishing period and in no-fishing zones for three months from April 1 to June 30, the report said.

Those who fail to follow the instructions will face legal actions, it added. - Xinhua
