German defence minister visits partners in Japan, Singapore and Australia

BERLIN: German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is heading to Japan, Singapore and Australia from Saturday (March 21) in a trip aimed at further expanding security cooperation with partners in Asia.

The visits will focus on issues relating to the rules-based international order, the security of sea lanes, the upholding of international law, and the region’s importance for global value creation and supply chains, the German Defence Ministry said.

Pistorius also intends to discuss the security situation in the region, the expansion of strategic dialogue and cooperation with the armed forces and the defence industry in the partner nations.

In recent years, the Bundeswehr armed forces have already increased their participation in exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.

The German government believes that security in Europe and security in the Indo-Pacific are inextricably linked. - dpa
