BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The son of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Prince Abdul Mateen Hassanal Bolkiah and his wife Princess Anisha Rosnah Adam welcomed their first baby, a daughter, on Sunday (Feb 8).

The news was celebrated with a 17-cannon salute fired from the grounds of Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan.

According to the Bruneian outlet RTB News which first announced the birth, the new baby was not born into the line of succession to the throne as the Succession and Regency Proclamation, 1959, within Brunei's constitution stipulates that only males are eligible.

Prince Mateen, 34, is one of the Sultan's 10 children and is currently fifth in line to the sultanate's throne.

In October 2025, he and his wife, Princess Anisha, 31, announced that they were expecting their first child together.

The couple got married in January 2024 in a grand 10-day royal wedding celebration.
