Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes in western Myanmar


YANGON: A moderate earthquake measuring magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar on February 3, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

The earthquake occurred at 10:21:29 p.m. Myanmar Standard Time, with its epicentre located about 26 miles west-northwest of Sattutthara.

The tremor was recorded at a depth of 44 kilometres, at latitude 20.54 degrees north and longitude 93.85 degrees east. It was detected approximately 69 miles east-northeast of the Sittwe seismic station.

Earlier the same day, another stronger earthquake measuring magnitude 6.0 struck the same area. That tremor occurred at 10:04:02 p.m. Myanmar Standard Time, with its epicentre about 20 miles west-northwest of Sattutthara, at a depth of 58 kilometres.

The coordinates were recorded at latitude 20.50 degrees north and longitude 93.94 degrees east, about 73 miles east-northeast of the Sittwe seismic station.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said both earthquakes were of moderate intensity. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available at the time of reporting. - Eleven Media/ANN
