MANILA: (Bernama-Xinhua) At least one person was killed, and five others were injured after a landfill collapsed in a village in the central Philippine city of Cebu on Thursday (Jan 8) afternoon, Xinhua reported, citing local media.

Five victims have so far been transported to local hospitals following the collapse of the landfill in Barangay Binaliw, according to Dave Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

A local official said the landfill gave way due to the sheer volume of waste piled up at the site, which destabilised the area.

The official added that continuous rainfall over the past several days worsened the situation by softening the soil and triggering the slide.

Search and rescue teams immediately rushed to the scene to locate and assist those believed to be trapped beneath the debris.

The area has been cordoned off as rescue operations continued, amid concerns that unstable ground conditions could pose further risks. - Bernama-Xinhua
