BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The rapid advancement of technology and the fast pace of modern life should not erode the “Brunei Identity” among the youth, said Acting Director of Information Siti Bismi Nuruliman Awang Emzah.

She said this during the opening of the Civic Programme 2025/2026 at the Auditorium Hall, Annexe Building of the Information Department on Monday (Dec 8).

Today’s youth – who face increasingly complex challenges and competition – must remain proactive in equipping themselves not only with a high level of education but also with good morals, behaviour, and broad knowledge.

These qualities are vital to national progress and development, alongside a mindset that does not easily give up, she said.

This, she noted, was also emphasised by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during a get-together ceremony with students as well as citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam in Malaysia on Oct 25. The Sultan also observed that success in achieving good scores on paper is not enough; true success comes from developing one’s potential in all aspects – intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical.

The acting director also expressed hope that civic programmes like this would instil a sense of love and civic responsibility among the public. She noted that such programmes play a significant role in shaping visionary youth who are critical thinkers, innovative, resilient, and socially aware, in line with Brunei Vision 2035.

Youth, as future leaders, are a key group in determining the country’s direction to remain prosperous, sustainable, and harmonious, based on the values of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

As stated by the Sultan during the 20th National Youth Day celebration 2025, today’s youth possess strong spirit and leadership potential.

“The positive transformation shown by the youth reflects their willingness to shoulder heavy responsibilities as leaders. This is important in realising the aspirations of Brunei Vision 2035.”

The monarch has also emphasised that youth should be encouraged to strengthen their identity through religious knowledge as well as the values of MIB to uphold a future that is excellent and dignified.

The acting director said the department will continue to listen to the aspirations and hopes of the youth, and develop ideas for the nation’s future through this programme.

Conducted from Monday to Saturday, the programme features briefings, educational visits to government and private agencies, as well as team-building activities.

The programme with 48 participants aimed to provide the public with understanding and up-to-date information regarding national and governmental affairs, ensure that citizens remain aware of current developments, and nurture a sense of nationhood based on the MIB philosophy, emphasising cultural, religious, and sovereign values that form the foundation of the national identity. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
