Court issues third-party notice over jewellery seized from ex-army chief’s third wife

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here has issued a third-party gazette for any individuals to claim their stake in jewellery forfeited from the third wife of former army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Salwani Anuar @ Kamaruddin.

Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi issued the gazette after allowing an application by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat who sought for the gazette.

The court was earlier informed that Salwani, as the respondent, had no intention to challenge the forfeiture proceedings.

Salwani's lawyer Muhammad Kausar Mohd Khairi confirmed the matter.

"The respondent has no objection to this (third-party gazette) application. We will file an affidavit-in-reply as proof that we are not objecting," Muhammad Kausar said.

Judge Azura issued the gazette under Section 41(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) 2009.

The court fixed July 31 for hearing of the third-party gazette, before the court can decide whether the properties would be forfeited to the government or otherwise.

On May 4, the prosecution filed the application to forfeit the jewellery from Salwani.

The notice stated that the movable properties were seized under Subsection 41(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and are currently being kept in the custody of the MACC.

On Jan 22, Salwani was charged with four counts of receiving proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM50,000, RM7,000, RM10,000 and RM10,000, which were deposited into a company bank account at a bank branch in Damansara Heights, Wisma UOA II here, between Nov 24, 2024 and Nov 25, 2025.

The charges were framed under Subsection 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA), read together with Subsection 87(1)(a), and punishable under Subsection 4(1) of the same Act.

Salwani was also charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Terengganu on Jan 26 with receiving RM5,000, which was allegedly proceeds from unlawful activities, deposited into her personal bank account at a bank branch in Jertih, near Besut, on Jan 16, 2025.
