YANGON: Four men have been arrested and charged under the Law on the Protection of Multi-Party Democracy General Elections for destroying party signboards in Yangon, according to security authorities.
Security forces said they are taking action against anyone attempting to disrupt the 2025 multi-party democracy general election by damaging campaign materials, spreading misleading information, protesting illegally or posting incitement on social media and in public places.
During a patrol at around 3:05 am. on November 14, a joint team from the Thingangyun Township Police Station discovered that a Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) signboard installed at a park on the corner of Lay Daung Kan Street and U Ba Han Street in Lay Daung Kan Ward had been destroyed.
Reports later confirmed that People’s Party signboards at two locations—Laydaugnkan Road and Zambudipa Road in Bo Kan Nyunt Ward, and Laydaungkan Road and Sumingalar Road (Jawana Junction) in Thumingalar Ward—as well as a People’s Pioneer Party (PPP) signboard, had also been damaged.
Authorities quickly launched a search operation. Shwe Lin Oo of Yan Aung Ward and Khaing Min Ko of Bo Kan Nyunt Ward were arrested at 3:10 am. on U San Pe Ward, Bayint Naung Road, near the crime scene.
Swan Htet Aung of Yan Aung Ward was apprehended at 4:05 am. at his aunt’s home on Yan Aung Road. Chit Lin was arrested at 5 am. at an acquaintance’s house on Zambu Chate Street in Bo Kan Nyunt Ward.
Thingangyun Township Police Station has opened a case under Section 24(a) of the Protection of Multi-Party Democracy General Elections Act (PA 239/2025). Officials said action is being taken to ensure effective punishment for the destruction of campaign materials. - Eleven Media/ANN
