No increase in influenza cases in Brunei in 2025: health ministry

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: There has been no increase in influenza cases reported in Brunei in 2025, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday (Oct 21).

According to the ministry's press release, a total of 207 confirmed influenza cases were detected between January to October 15 in 2025, compared to 259 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.

Of this year's cases, 19 per cent involved children under 12 years old. The ministry added that no clusters or deaths related to influenza have been reported so far in Brunei.

Influenza viruses typically cause mild symptoms such as fever, flu, sore throat, or cough. However, they can lead to severe infections among high-risk groups, including infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

At the global level, the World Health Organisation indicates that influenza virus infections remain low, with trends following the usual seasonal pattern. - Xinhua
