BEIJING: A Chinese veteran in Jiangsu province was not afraid to get his feet wet when he saw a car fall into a river on Oct 14.
In a video posted on Chinese news outlet CGTN’s Facebook page on Oct 16, the veteran, Di Shuangcheng, can be seen swimming towards a car a few metres away from the riverbank in Taizhou city.
When he reaches the car, Di uses what appears to be a brick to break the car’s sunroof.
While reaching through the sunroof to hoist the trapped driver out of the vehicle rapidly filling up with water, Di asks the driver if there are any passengers on board.
The police arrive and pull the driver back to shore with Di’s help, according to the Facebook video.
Another Chinese news outlet, Jimu News, reported on Oct 17 that Di was revealed to be a military veteran by his father-in-law on Oct 15.
“I am very happy that my son-in-law saved someone. I treated him to a drink,” Di’s father-in-law told Jimu News.
On the morning of Oct 17, Di was presented with an award by the local authorities for his bravery, according to Jimu News.
The news outlet added that Di said he would do it again if faced with a similar situation in future.
The driver has been transferred to a general ward in a hospital. - The Straits Times/ANN
