HONG KONG: The Hong Kong Observatory has cancelled the amber rainstorm warning signal while reminding members of the public to stay alert to the danger that may be brought about by river floods.

The observatory dropped the amber rainstorm signal at 12.30pm on Sunday (Aug 3) after raising it just before lunctime.

The HKO earlier hoisted the amber rainstorm warning at 5.45am but also canceled it two hours later.

Thunderstorm warning

A thunderstorm warning issued at 6.45pm on Saturday remained in place and was extended until 2pm Sunday.

The observatory urged those staying outdoors to seek shelter and avoid standing on high ground.

An active southwest monsoon and upper-air disturbances were forecast to bring heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days, the HKO said.

On Saturday morning, the HKO issued the black rainstorm warning signal – the highest in the city’s three-tier rainstorm warning system – as heavy showers and thunderstorms hit the city. - China Daily/ANN
