Hanoi to implement trial ban on single-use plastics in inner city

HANOI: Restaurants, coffee shops and beverage outlets in the inner area of Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, will begin piloting a ban on single-use plastics in the fourth quarter of this year, Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper reported Tuesday (July 15)

The pilot programme is expected to expand citywide according to a phased timeline.

From Jan 1, 2026, hotels and resorts will be prohibited from using or distributing single-use plastic items, including toothbrushes, razors, cotton swabs, shower caps and plastic packaging for personal care products.

Starting Jan 1, 2027, markets and convenience stores will no longer be allowed to offer non-biodegradable plastic bags free of charge.

By Jan 1, 2028, these establishments will be fully banned from circulating or using single-use plastics, plastic bags and non-biodegradable packaging materials.

According to the Hanoi People's Committee, the city generates over 1,400 tonnes of plastic waste each day, with single-use plastics and plastic bags accounting for approximately 60 per cent of the total. - Xinhua
