YANGON: From February 2021 to May 25, 2025, over a span of more than four years, there have been 82 incidents of mine attacks on railway tracks and station areas, and 176 incidents of mine explosions targeting railway bridges and tracks, according to a press release by the Information Team of the State Administration Council (SAC).
The statement was issued in response to an incident on the morning of May 25, when a freight train derailed after a mine explosion on the Bago-Mawlamyine railway line between Theinseik and Donwun stations in Thaton Township.
The press release detailed that Train No. 687, a freight train departing from Thebyugon on the Bago-Mawlamyine route, left Theinseik Station in Thaton Township, Mon State, at 5:10 AM. While passing between mileposts 123/23-24, near Theinseik and Donwun stations, a mine planted by insurgents exploded at 8:45 AM, causing the locomotive, mine-protection wagon, driver’s cabin wagon and five stone wagons to derail.
Following the attack, the railway section between Theinseik and Donwun was temporarily closed at 8:51 AM. As a result, Train No. 81, which had departed from Yangon as scheduled on the morning of May 25, was forced to stop at Theinzayat Station at 10:15 AM. Similarly, Train No. 82, traveling from Mawlamyine, had to halt at Thebyugon Station at 9:07 AM.
