BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), held the launching ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam Climate Book and the release of BDMD’s new Strategic Plan book for the five-year period, from 2026 to 2030, known as Meteorology 2030 at Amar Pahlawan Hall, MTIC Building on Monday (May 25).
BDMD Acting Director Rokiah Angas as chairperson of the event shared that the BDMD hopes the publication will serve as a valuable reference resource for students, educators, relevant agencies, and the public in gaining a deeper understanding of the nation’s climate, while further enhancing climate literacy among the community in this country.
She also revealed, “The BDMD has prepared a Strategic Plan for the years 2026 to 2030, entitled ‘Meteorology 2030’. This plan outlines the department’s focus areas and priorities in line with the nation’s development aspirations, including Brunei Vision 2035, the ministry’s strategic direction, as well as international commitments under the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and International Maritime Organization (IMO).”
This strategic plan, she explained, “places emphasis on efforts to enhance the quality and reliability of weather and climate services, strengthen operational capabilities through innovation and system modernisation, empower the competencies of the department’s personnel, and reinforce strong governance, while also expanding strategic cooperation with various stakeholders”.
The ceremony continued with the launch of the Brunei Darussalam Climate Book by Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary Mustapha, the guest of honour, followed by the presentation of the book to representatives of relevant agencies from the National Disaster Management Centre, Ministry of Education, Public Works Department and Brunei Climate Change Office.
The Brunei Darussalam Climate Book outlines the country’s weather patterns and climate characteristics, including seasonal variations and the key factors influencing the climate, while also highlighting observed climate change trends in the country, through simple and easy-to-understand visual illustrations.
The publication, released in conjunction with the World Meteorological Day 2026 celebration, is expected to enhance climate literacy among the public and serve as a useful reference to support more effective planning and decision-making.
Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Ir Mohammad Nazr Mohammad Yusof, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications) at the MTIC Hairul Mohd Daud Abdul Karim and Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport) at the MTIC Ridzuan Ahmad were also present. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
