JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Mount Semeru erupted five times on Tuesday (May 26) morning, spewing volcanic ash up to 1,000 metres above its summit.
Mount Semeru Observation Post officer Sigit Rian Alfian said the eruptions occurred between 1.05am and 8.37am local time, with the largest eruption recorded at 6.28am.
He said the ash column from the largest eruption rose about 1,000 metres above the summit and drifted to southwest and west.
"The eruptions were recorded on seismographs with amplitudes ranging from 12mm to 22mm and durations between 109 and 142 seconds,” he said, according to Antara News Agency, on Tuesday.
Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, is the highest volcano on Java island, standing 3,676 metres above sea level.
Sigit said Semeru’s volcanic activity remained at Level III, the second-highest level in Indonesia’s four-tier volcano warning system. - Bernama
