BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Secretary of Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia Language Council (MABBIM) Brunei Darussalam, Dayang Haireni Awang Damit, highlighted the importance of acting wisely and boldly in addressing current global challenges to further elevate and expand the use of the Malay and Indonesian languages.

She noted that language is more than a communication tool — it is an identity, a symbol of dignity, and a national heritage that must be preserved and strengthened collectively.

These points were underscored during her closing remarks at the conclusion of the two-day MABBIM Secretariat Meeting, which concluded Thursday (May 22) at Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.

Dayang Hajah Haireni, who is also Acting Deputy Director of the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), chaired the meeting hosted by Brunei Darussalam from May 21 to 22, 2025.

She shared that the meeting went beyond reviewing MABBIM’s ongoing initiatives, successfully fostering consensus on reassessing existing programmes and evaluating new proposals that add value and provide a sharper focus in efforts to promote the Malay and Indonesian languages.

Malaysia’s delegation was led by Mohd Fadzli Tajuid, while Indonesia’s delegation was headed by Dr Dewi Puspita.

“As the MABBIM Secretariat, we carry a significant responsibility in ensuring every issue is thoroughly deliberated before being brought to the 2nd MABBIM Heads of Forum tomorrow, where decisions will be jointly made by the Heads of Delegation and representatives from member countries,” she said.

She also expressed sincere appreciation to the delegations from Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam for their full commitment and insightful contributions during the discussions.

“It is hoped that the outcomes of the meeting — whether in implementation or planning — will not remain rhetoric, but be transformed into real action within the agreed timelines,” she added.

The meeting was attended by MABBIM Secretaries and delegation members from the three countries.
