4.6-magnitude quake hits waters off Mindanao


MANILA: A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the waters off Burgos, Surigao del Norte in Mindanao, on Sunday morning (March 16), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The state seismologist initially reported it at magnitude 5.1.

It was recorded at 9:10 a.m., 26 kilometres (km) northeast of the town.

Phivolcs said it was tectonic in origin with a depth of focus of 14 km.

Reported intensity III was logged in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, and in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, instrumental intensity III was recorded in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs previously explained that reported intensity is the strength of an earthquake as felt and reported by people.

Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured by an intensity meter or scale.

No damage to property, but aftershocks may be expected, it added. - Philippine Daily Inquirere/ANN
