Errant businesses in Brunei fined

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy issued fines to two businesses for non-compliance with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and regulations under it.

This was following a routine enforcement inspection by JPES personnel and consumer complaints received by the department through official channels. The two businesses were found to be repeat offenders.

A shop in Kampong Selayun caught for violating Section 3B which is selling goods exceeding the price ceiling was fined BND500 while a departmental store in Gadong found to have violated Section 5 for not displaying prices was fined BND700.

Thirteen warnings were also issued to 11 businesses throughout July with the majority of offences being non-compliance with price tag regulations such as failing to display price tags and display misleading prices not consistent with prices in the payment system.

Retailers are reminded to comply with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 by implementing ethical business practices such as not selling above the price ceiling for price-controlled products and ensure that the goods sold are clearly marked with price tags.

The public is advised to make prudent and responsible purchases by comparing prices for the best value.
