Moderna reaches supply deal with Philippines for 13 million vaccine doses

MANILA, March 6 (Reuters): Moderna Inc has announced that it has agreed to supply the Philippines government 13 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine, with deliveries set to begin in mid-2021.

The company will work with regulators to pursue necessary approvals prior to the distribution, it said in a press release.

Moderna said it expected to reach a separate deal with the Philippines government and private sector to supply an additional 7 million doses.

In January, the Philippines' Food and Drug Administration approved the Covid-19 vaccine by Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE for emergency use.

Cirrently, there is a current surge in cases in the country.

Over 3,000 cases was reported each day on Friday and Saturday. It was the highest daily numbers seen in the last four months in Philippines.

There has also been rising number of cases in terns of different variants of Covid-19 cases.

The Philippines has recorded 52 more cases of a highly contagious coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa, the health ministry said on Friday (March 5), presenting new challenges for a country battling one of Asia's worst outbreaks.

Out of the new cases of the variant, known as B.1.351, the health ministry said 41 were detected in Manila, while the origin of the others was still being verified. The Philippines first reported six cases of the variant on Tuesday (March 2).

The South-East Asian country started its inoculation drive on Monday, but health experts worry the discovery of new variants could complicate its effort.

Health authorities also reported on Friday 31 more infections of a variant first identified in Britain, raising the total to 118.

In addition to the two variants, the health ministry said it had detected 42 more cases of "mutations of potential clinical significance" in samples collected from Filipinos returning from overseas and residents in Manila and the central Philippines. - Reuters
