NEW DELHI: At least 15 people were killed, and seven others reported missing in rain-related incidents across India's southern state of Kerala, officials said Monday.
The information was given by Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan in a press briefing after reviewing the flood situation in the state with top officials.
"The death toll in rain-related incidents across Kerala has risen to 15, while seven people remain missing," Satheesan said.
The local government has intensified rescue and relief operations amid continuing heavy rain.
As per official data until Monday morning, 11,018 people displaced by the rain and flooding have been accommodated in 316 relief camps set up across the state.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in the state on Aug. 3 and 6, accompanied by strong winds at 40-50 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast due to the likelihood of strong winds of up to 60 kmph and rough sea conditions.
Reports said the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services warned of high waves measuring 2.7 to 3.5 meters along the northern Kerala coast and advised fishermen and coastal residents to remain vigilant.
Officials said heavy rains have raised water levels in rivers in Ernakulam, prompting alerts for residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas.
Amid incessant rains, several district administrations in Kerala have declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. The district administrations have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, quarries, waterfalls and waterlogged areas. People living in flood- and landslide-prone locations have been asked to follow the instructions issued by local authorities.
People in the vulnerable areas have also been advised to stay indoors unless travel is necessary and regularly check official district announcements for the latest updates. - Xinhua
