Wello: A full medical in a smartphone case

The Wello protective iPhone case can measure heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and blood pressure as you hold it in your hands.

And, if that's not sufficiently impressive, you can even check lung function by blowing into an attachment.

But perhaps the neatest trick is that all of this health monitoring functionality is packed into a case that doesn't add any further weight or bulk to a smartphone.

The readings it provides are well designed, too, thanks to the supporting app. The graphics are clear, simple and easy to understand, and readings can be compiled and tracked over time to look for patterns. And of course, data can be shared too, if the user wants to.

But there's more. The Wello will also interact with other gadgets such as connected weighing scales and sleep trackers to provide the most comprehensive picture possible of health and well-being.

And while it comes cleverly disguised as a case for the iPhone 5 and 5S, Wello is also available for Android devices that run KitKat 4.4 and support Bluetooth LE as a standalone device. The company describes it as an "independent inset."

Wello is available to pre-order now in the US, Canada, China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Britain and across the European Union via the company's website for €145 (RM654.98).

The first European orders are expected to be fulfilled this summer while it should be reaching its first US owners in the autumn; the Wello is currently in the process of receiving FDA approval. — ©AFP/Relaxnews 2014
