Anwar: Let's solve it together

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has offered an olive branch to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Barisan Nasional, saying that there needs to be a national consensus to address issues affecting religious and racial harmony in the country.

The PKR adviser said such a national consensus should not just cover one or two specific issues, such as the use of the kalimah Allah and the seizure of Bibles, but also other issues leading to religious and racial discord.

The Opposition Leader said the dialogue should reaffirm the position of Islam in the country and reject the notion that Islam was under threat by other religions.

“We (Muslims) must reject the notion that Islam is under threat and that there is some sinister conspiracy to replace Islam as the religion of the federation by some other religion,” he said.

Aside from that, Anwar said the national consensus should address other pressing issues such as the rising cost of living, corruption and security.

“Instead of fighting figments of imagination, let us help our police fight crime and make our homes, our schools and our shopping complexes safer,” Anwar said when opening a PKR Youth forum here yesterday.

Anwar said that the situation in the country had now reached untenable levels and it was threatening to “tear apart the very fabric of our unity and identity as Malaysians”.

“Of course, we have not reached the tipping point yet but as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he added.

“We want all, including the Prime Minister and Barisan, to consider that we cannot go on at this rate, ignoring the concerns and fears,” said Anwar.

“In fact, we have not seen such tensions building up since the national tragedy of May 13, 1969,” he said.

He reminded all leaders irrespective oftheir political belief that national interest should be put above political agendas.

“Duty towards the nation is greater than duty to the party,” he said.
