TAWAU: A woman and her son have died on Tuesday (Aug 12), believed to be from food poisoning after attending a wedding in a village here.
The victims, a 36-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son, experienced diarrhoea and vomiting before their deaths.
Tawau Deputy OCPD Supt Champin Piuh said that a 24-year-old woman lodged a report at about 10.30am on Tuesday, claiming her aunt and cousin had died, possibly from food poisoning.
"The complainant said that the aunt and her son attended a wedding ceremony in the village last Saturday," he said.
He added the victim also packed some food to take home for her husband to eat.
"However, after eating the food, her husband also experienced diarrhoea and vomiting for two days," he told Sinar Harian on Wednesday (Aug 13).
According to Supt Champin, preliminary investigations found that other wedding guests also experienced similar symptoms.
"The Health Ministry is still investigating the actual cause of the food poisoning. A forensic team from Sabah police headquarters also investigated the scene," he said.
He added the case has been classified as sudden death and the bodies of both victims were sent to Tawau Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
"The autopsy was completed at approximately 6.30pm on Tuesday and found no signs of injuries," he said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.
