WASHINGTON: Garmin says it is releasing new software and feature updates for select smartwatches, including the fenix 8 series, Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, Venu 4 and vívoactive 6, as well as compatible Edge cycling computers.
Announced on Sept 22, the features are said to help owners get more from their devices and take their training to the next level.
The navigation and wearable tech company said the latest updates add fall detection to Venu 4, which can send a user's live location to emergency contacts after a hard fall.
New smartwatch features include hands-free voice controls, quick running workout suggestions, adaptive Garmin Run Coach plans and an Indoor XC Ski activity profile.
Edge cycling computers are also receiving an Enduro update that automatically switches between climbing and descent modes.
In 2025, a Garmin watch update left some devices stuck on a start screen (including a "blue triangle” display), and users were advised on recovery steps – a reminder that major feature updates can also carry reliability risks.
Garmin has also been selling cycling-focused hardware such as rear-view radar/light and camera products for cyclists, showing its broader push beyond wrist wearables into bike safety and performance gear. – dpa
