BERLIN: Garmin is bringing two popular apps to various sports watches in its range: WhatsApp messages can now be read and sent, while the Pokémon Sleep app can also be linked to various Garmin watches.

The watch can then display your sleep data while also giving you a little Pokémon as a watch face. In each case, this requires a smartphone paired with the watch with the relevant app installed.

These WhatsApp features work on Garmin watches

The following WhatsApp features can be used on compatible smartwatches after installing the app on the watch from Garmin's Connect IQ app store:

  • Display and read messages and chats.
  • Reply to messages using an on-screen keyboard.Send emojis and symbols.
  • View chat histories with up to 10 messages.
  • Display incoming calls with the option to reject them.

How Pokemon Sleep works on the smartwatches

You'll need the Garmin Connect app to link Pokémon Sleep. Sleep measurement data is then transferred via this interface when you wear the Garmin watch at night.

This is what can be seen on the two Pokémon Sleep watch faces ("Relaxo & Friends" and "Your Turn") on many of the manufacturer's sports watches, also after installation via Connect IQ:

  • Sleep quality, energy level (Body Battery) and heart rate can be viewed.
  • Good sleep or good sleep habits are rewarded with new Pokémon that appear on the watch face.
  • During the day, the displayed Pokémon changes its posture depending on the remaining Body Battery level.
  • At night, the selected Pokémon randomly changes its sleeping positions and the display switches to a darker night mode.
