CLEVELAND: News of TikTok’s recent update allowing users to control how much artificial intelligence-generated content appears in their “For You” feeds seems to be creating some buzz.
The platform will begin helping with that agency. Users can now adjust a new slider in the app’s settings to see more or less of this content, rather than TikTok limiting it by default for all users.
Key details of the update
User Preference Controls: In the “Manage Topics” section of their settings, users will find a new control for AI-generated content (AIGC). This works on a slider system, offering options to “see much less” or “see much more” AI material, allowing for a personalized experience.
Invisible Watermarking: To make content filtering and labeling more effective, TikTok is testing “invisible watermarks” for videos created with its own AI tools (like AI Editor Pro) or uploaded with C2PA Content Credentials. This technology aims to make labels harder to remove when content is re-uploaded or shared elsewhere, a common challenge in the industry.
Mandatory Labelling and Penalties: TikTok’s existing guidelines require creators to label realistic AI-generated content. The platform has increased enforcement, and unlabelled AI content that gets detected by TikTok faces significant reach suppression (up to 73% within 48 hours) and potential account strikes.
AI Literacy Fund: The company also launched a US$2mil (RM8.3mil) AI literacy fund to sponsor experts (like the non-profit Girls Who Code) to create educational content about AI safety and identification.
This change is a response to user feedback about “AI slop” or low-quality AI content flooding feeds, and it contrasts with platforms like Meta, which have explored dedicated AI-only feeds. The move is seen as giving users more power to tailor their experience as AI content becomes more prevalent online. – cleveland.com/Tribune News Service
