Photo collage, music, stickers: Upcoming tools for WhatsApp Status

WhatsApp is rolling out new tools to help users get more creative with updates on Status.

In a recent blog announcement, the company said users will be able to use a Layout feature, where they can turn up to six photos into a collage using WhatsApp's native editing tools.

Users can also make a Status post using a particular song, or add a music sticker to set the mood.

WhatsApp will also introduce Photo Stickers for users to turn a photo into a sticker and add to their Status. They will also be able to edit the photo to the preferred size and shape.

Finally, users can choose a picture and use the 'Add Yours' sticker to invite friends to share the content into their own Status update.

WhatsApp said it will start rolling out the tools to all users in the coming months.

For context, Status is a feature that allows users to share fleeting updates to their contacts on the app.

The update – such as photos, videos or text – will disappear after 24 hours. The feature is similar to Stories on Instagram or Snapchat.

When WhatsApp was first available in 2009, Status had a text-only functionality. Then, users could only choose from a series of preset options like "Available" or "At school" to indicate their current status or update.

Then in 2017, the company redesigned the Status feature to allow users to share more content.
