Twitter is reportedly working on a feature to limit the number of direct messages or DMs that non-verified users can send in one day.

A screenshot of the feature in the works shows a pop-up message or a prompt asking the user to “Get verified to send more messages”.

Additional information include: “You’ve hit the maximum limit for Direct Messages in a single day. Sign up for Twitter Blue to continue messaging.”

The screenshot was uploaded by Twitter user Alessandro Paluzzi, who described himself as a “mobile developer” and “leaker”. Paluzzi is also the developer behind WA Tweaker, a mobile application for Android rooted devices that allow users to enable hidden features on WhatsApp.

According to its platform guidelines, Twitter has a limit of 500 messages per day for DMs. The move is intended to “alleviate some strains” on Twitter’s back-end processes and potentially reduce downtime and error pages.

Even though the current limit is set at 500, Paluzzi speculated that the limit may be reduced once the feature is rolled out.

The daily DM limit may be an extension of an upcoming feature that will also affect the way non-Twitter Blue subscribers engage with other users on the site.

Previously on June 8, Paluzzi revealed that Twitter is working on only allowing verified users to send DM requests to people who don’t follow them.

In response to a separate user who said his DMs are now filled with messages from bots, Twitter owner Elon Musk said the update to only allow verified users to send DMs on the platform will be out soon.

“Hopefully releasing the update this week. As I’ve said many times, it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between AI bots. Soon, it will be impossible.”

“The only ‘social networks’ that survive will be those that require verification. The payment system is a means of verification that increases bot cost by ~10,000X,” he claimed in a tweet on June 12.

Musk introduced a revamped version of Twitter Blue in November last year which includes perks like the verified blue checkmark and ability to post tweets with more characters. Twitter Blue starts at RM35 monthly.
