'Stop!' You now need just one word to shut up your Google Assistant

You can tell the Google Assistant to "shut up" as much as you want, but so long as you don't say the magic words "Hey Google" it will just keep talking.

This can be pretty annoying when Google gets something wrong and you just want it to stop.

Until recently, the obligatory "Hey Google" followed by "stop" was needed to put a stop to Google's chatterbox Assistant.

But Google says it has upgraded the smarts of its AI assistant to respond to just "stop" whenever it's responding to a command. "Want your smart display or speaker to stop talking? Just say 'stop' – no 'Hey Google' needed," Google said on Twitter in January.

The Google Assistant is notorious for jumping into unwanted monologues when it hears what it thinks is a request for information.

If you are using a smart speaker you can now use the "stop" command whenever it's lighting up and speaking. It's also a handy way to silence any alarms or timers. – dpa
