A new look at video game crossover Sonic At The Olympic Games previews the franchise's second outing on mobile formats, both away from traditional Olympic partner (and Nintendo mascot) Mario.
Fresh from the Tokyo Game Show, Sonic At The Olympic Games streamlines the last dozen years of Mario and Sonic sporting competition in favour of the blue blaze and his franchise pals.
Where Mario & Sonic games have been exclusive to Nintendo consoles, starting with the Wii and DS, and landing on the Switch through Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, this mobile affair instead targets mobile gamers with a selection of sporting challenges.
Players can expect to see Sega mascot Sonic and a raft of fellow franchise characters involved in Olympic events that include tennis, diving, fencing, hurdles, wall climbing, clay pigeon shooting and hammer throwing.
There'll be a handful of Sonic The Hedgehog franchise elements thrown in for good measure too, such as collectible golden rings and pinball-style ricochet bumpers.
Sonic At The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games is expected to launch between March and May 2020 on Android and iOS as a single-player game with international rankings.
Sonic had previously made his Olympic Games mobile gaming debut through 2008's identically titled Sonic At The Olympic Games.
Also published and developed by Sega, Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is expected early November, with Sonic and Nintendo mascot Mario continuing their now-friendly rivalry on the Nintendo Switch, while the Olympic Games themselves are to be held in Tokyo and the surrounding area from July 24 to Aug 9, 2020.
A Sonic The Hedgehog feature film is also due in 2020, with a staggered international release to begin in February, starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter in leading roles. – AFP Relaxnews
