Reddit has taken to its associated blog to outline that individual communities can design and create their own subreddit-specific awards promoting high-quality content.
Until now, Redditors could only reward other users for posting content they like by spending digital coins to send them a generic silver, gold, or platinum award. As of July 24, a fourth, more special type of award has joined the ranks: The Community Award.
This type of award is created by the moderator or moderating team of a specific community for that specific community, otherwise known as a subreddit. This person – or group of people – designs the award icon, selects a name, and chooses how much offering the award to other Redditors costs.
The subreddit r/casualconversation gained access to this feature early, as testing began in April. The Community Awards that the moderating team created for this community include "Neat", "Positive Pineapple", "Prideful Pineapple", and "Prestigious Pineapple". While the first three types of awards cost 300 or 400 coins, the Prestigious Pineapple costs 40,000, and is "For the utmost highest class of posts".
Since awards are unique to communities, they can only be awarded within their respective communities. By tapping the same button you would to reward a post with a gold, silver, or platinum award – "Give Award" – you'll find the subreddit-specific choices, as well.
Over the upcoming weeks, access to Community Awards will become available to eligible communities. – AFP Relaxnews
