Out-of-this-world action game Borderlands 3 is targeting a Sept 13 launch across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and, via the Epic Games Store, on PC, as pre-orders go live and a second trailer fleshes out some of the new title's attractions.

Having been unveiled at the PAX East games convention last week, looter shooter Borderlands 3 is heading for a September launch this year.

The release date announcement also allowed developer Gearbox Software and publisher Take-Two Interactive (through sublabel 2K Games) to expand on story, character, and gameplay details in a new trailer.

The four new player-characters are Amara, who can summon ethereal fists, FL4K the cybernetic beast tamer, Moze the mech pilot, and Zane the sneaky gadget-using special operative.

Troy and Tyreen Calypso are the galaxy's most ruthless cult leaders and the game's twin antagonists.

This second trailer also provides a better look at how each of the player-character skills work in practice: we see Amara pack a powerful open-handed punch, Moze encased within a walking tank, Fl4k, on one occasion, accompanied by a loyal dog-like creature, and Zane deploying a high-tech drone.

And a first Borderlands 3 descriptor offers precision around more bizarre weaponry details – some guns will be able to produce self-propelling bullet shields, fire-spewing volcanoes, or little legs and big insults.

Building on 2012 hit Borderlands 2, this third numbered franchise entry will take players to a number of different worlds, while an augmented multiplayer system allows players to join one another's games regardless of progression, loot being awarded on an individual basis.

A hands-on gameplay reveal has been scheduled for May 1. – AFP Relaxnews
