Google is helping to fuel the podcast surge with its first dedicated podcast app. Unlike the iOS platform which has Apple's native Podcasts app, Android users have long needed to use non-native apps like Podcast Addict and Spotify to listen to podcasts.

The Google Podcasts (Android) app aims to integrate podcast listening by subscribing them across all user devices so that users can start listening on a smart speaker, pick up on a tablet and finish on a smartphone.

With an interface as simple as its name, Google Podcasts goes for a neater look and offers fewer functions and menu options than Android's Podcast Addict.

Based on your personal interests, the free app will recommend further content. The current offering includes numerous podcasts from public broadcasters and countless other private providers.

Podcasts are listed by popularity and genres such as News & Politics, Comedy or Society & Culture. — dpa
