The password manager 1Password has added a major new security feature. In addition to the strength of the password, the program can now also determine whether it has already been cracked elsewhere. For this purpose 1Password uses the database Pwned Passwords by the Australian security expert Troy Hunt.
Accessing the data allows the software to cross-check passwords against known data leaks. This means users can make sure that a password is still deemed safe when setting it. According to 1Password, the service is available to all users.
"Pwned Passwords" can also be accessed free of charge without using 1Password. For security reasons, users shouldn't enter their real passwords, Troy Hunt warns in the blog. However, the service may still prove useful if you want to take unsafe passwords off your list. — dpa
