Security firm Trend Micro recommends users who have Apple’s QuickTime on their Windows machines to uninstall the media player as soon as possible.

As Apple will no longer be issuing security updates or patches for the product on the Windows platform, it can become vulnerable to attacks.

In fact, its Zero Day Initiative security research programme has found two new critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows which is detailed in its two advisories – ZDI-16-241 and ZDI-16-242.

And because Apple is no longer providing security updates for QuickTime on Windows, these vulnerabilities are never going to be patched.

“We’re not aware of any active attacks against these vulnerabilities currently. But the only way to protect your Windows systems from potential attacks against these or other vulnerabilities in QuickTime now is to uninstall the program,” it said in a statement.

It added that its TippingPoint customers have been protected against the two vulnerabilities since November last year.

QuickTime for Windows now joins Microsoft’s own Windows XP operating system and Oracle Java 6 as software that will no longer be updated to fix vulnerabilities.

However, QuickTime users on Apple’s Mac OS X operating system will not be affected, as Apple will continue to develop it for its own platform.
