Apple's new Woven Nylon Band gives users yet another option to personalise their Apple Watch.
Along with the recent launch of the iPhone SE and the 9.7in iPad Pro, Apple also released a number of new colours for its existing straps and a completely new one – the Woven Nylon Band.
The strap is available in every country that Apple officially sells the Apple Watch and we’ve got one of the first shipments of the product for a quick review.
Nylon is the new rubber
Despite being the cheapest strap in Apple’s rather sizable stable of straps and bracelets for the Apple Watch, the elastomer strap (it’s often referred to as the rubber strap) is arguably the most comfortable.
Well, the Woven Nylon Band is the same price (RM249), and in terms of comfort, comes a very close second to the elastomer strap – it’s also lighter and in our opinion, looks more classy than the sporty elastomer strap.
As the name suggests, the band is actually made of woven nylon threads of contrasting colours and the underside is always a different colour from the top.
There are seven colours to choose from, namely gold/red, gold/royal blue, royal blue, pink, pearl, scuba blue and black.
The one we got was the gold/royal blue version – while some of the other colours are a little too loud for our tastes, we thought this one has a subtle (almost green) colour with contrasting tan edges which added a bit of colour to the Apple Watch without being over the top.
As we mentioned before, the underside of the strap is actually a different colour from the top – it has a gold and red thread pattern.
It’s unfortunate that Apple didn’t figure out some way to make the strap reversible. While you can technically attach the strap to the watch backwards, the buckle would be upside down.
Strap me up
In use, the Woven Nylon Band is nice. It’s a bit stiff at first but after a day or so, the fibres loosened up a bit and it got a little more flexible.
Unlike the more expensive straps, this band does not have a stainless steel lug connector – instead the end of the strap transitions into a hard piece of plastic which is coloured the same as the strap itself.
We found this plastic connector a little harder to slide in and out of the Apple Watch than the elastomer or metal connector.
Since this strap is made of woven nylon, it’s technically water resistant so it won’t be damaged if you get it wet – however, like any fabric it tends to soak up the water. In other words, the nylon will feel uncomfortably cold and wet until it dries out.
If you’re looking for a more elegant option than the elastomer strap but don’t want to break the bank to get the full leather options which start at a hefty RM749, the Woven Nylon Band might be the one for you.
In our time with it, we’ve found the band to be fairly comfortable and certainly stylish enough to add some pizazz to your Apple Watch.
We also like that it’s a little more hard-wearing than the leather strap – even though it soaks up water, it could be easily washed clean with a little soap and water.
Pros: Stylish; nice colours; relatively cheap compared with other Apple straps.
Cons: Can be a bit stiff at first; doesn’t repel water.
