The Starbucks stored value card also has a Year of the Monkey design for 2016
We trawl the Net to look for tech-related products with a Chinese New Year slant.
IT IS not tradition to give each other gifts for Chinese New Year but it’s a great time to buy new clothes and accessories for yourself.
Products in red and gold are considered especially auspicious for the occasion, so we trawled the Net for limited edition products that’s ideal for the geek in the family.
Here they are, in no particular order.
Yes, it’s red
You can never have enough data, and Yes is one of the few local telcos that’s offering a Chinese New Year themed bundle.
Called the Chinese New Year 2016 Super 88 postpaid promotion, it gives you more value for money – you get 11GB of data, which is double the monthly quota you get with the regular Super 88 plan.
For RM88 (before GST), you will also get the Huddle XS mobile hotspot which is worth RM509 but you will have to sign up for a one-year contract.
What makes it particularly festive (apart from the “lucky” 88 price) is that the Huddle XS is finished in red.
This device, which is only available in limited quantity, will look at home with all the other red Chinese New Year decorations in your house.
In a flash
If you are looking for something cute then Kingston has just the device for you – a USB thumbdrive in the shape of a monkey.
As you know, 2016 is the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese horoscope so Kingston has made the cap of the drive in the shape of a monkey’s head, with a nice gold colour finish.
As for technical specifications, the flash drive supports USB 3.1 for faster data transfer speed but only comes in one size – 32GB. We would have preferred a larger size but 32GB is not a bad size, especially for carrying photos and documents on the go.
The Monkey Limited Edition USB drive is available in IT shops as well as online stores such as Lazada.com.my and 11street.my.
It carries a list price of RM99 but if you hunt a little you will be able to find it for less.
Watch me
Perhaps the most expensive tech product with a Chinese New Year design is the special edition Apple Watch.
With the Apple Watch just launching in this country, Apple has also introduced a couple of exclusive models just for Chinese New Year.
The special edition models are based on the affordable Apple Watch Sport which comes with a Sport band.
It’s available in two sizes (38mm and 42mm) and two colours (silver and gold) – in other words, you have a choice of four variations.
According to the Apple website, the models will only be available for sale until Feb 22.
You can order them online – the 38mm version goes for RM1,599 while the 42mm version costs RM1,849.
If the Apple Watch is a little on the pricey side and you don’t mind going for a regular watch then check out the Swatch Lucky Monkey. At RM300, it certainly won’t break the bank and it’s an attractive timepiece sans smartwatch functions.
Lunar monkey
Starbucks releases a stored value card to celebrate almost every major occasion and the lunar new year is no exception.
The Chinese New Year Starbucks card is sure to be a hit with both coffee aficionados and card collectors.
The interesting thing about all Starbucks cards is that you can store a digital version of the card (with the same design) in the Starbucks app (for Android or iOS) so that you don’t have to carry the physical card.
After all, you wouldn’t want to misplace the limited edition card.
