KUALA LUMPUR: Shopee – a mobile-first social marketplace where everyone can browse, shop and sell – has officially launched here.
With over 400,000 items available for consumers, the latest customer-to-customer shopping marketplace places a strong emphasis on mobile shopping.
"In Malaysia, mobile penetration is very high and stands at 140%, with 45% of smartphone users having made a purchase via their phone in the past year,” said Shopee chief executive officer Chris Feng.
“With the trend leaning towards users purchasing through their smartphones, we see an opportunity here to get users to shop on Shopee’s mobile marketplace.”
Key to the new service is the live chat feature which allows real-time interaction between the seller and buyer through instant messages and photo sharing to better understand the products before a purchase is made.
Users also do not have to worry as purchases are protected with “Shopee Guarantee”, its secure payment service.
It ensures that buyers will receive their orders in the condition promised or advertised, failing which they will receive a refund, thereby eliminating the risk of fraud which is common among online shopping services.
Being a mobile-first service, the user interface is built with ease of use in mind, where users are able to personalise their home feed according to their favourite sellers and friends.
Besides shopping for bargain goods, users can also easily set up shop on Shopee, all free of charge without any fees or commission collected for installation, listing, buying or selling.
Another feature called Seller Assistant will be able to guide those who are setting up a shop on how to manage their business, organise the inventory and measure their store performance.
For example, they can easily figure out which products should be restocked, or which to offer a discount on to drive sales numbers, and react accordingly.
First soft-launched in June, Singapore-based Shopee is now also available in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Taiwan.
