STAGGERING: The New York City Department of Education audit sampled only nine of more than 1,700 city schools and one administration building, sparking fears that there could be millions of dollars worth of devices unaccounted for citywide.

NEW YORK: More than 2,200 computers purchased for New York City schools are missing or stashed away in closets and never used, according to an audit released by the city comptroller. 

The audit of the New York City Department of Education sampled only nine of more than 1,700 city schools and one administration building, sparking fears that millions of dollars worth of devices are unaccounted for citywide, Comptroller Scott Stringer said in a statement.
