WESTERN Digital has launched a new high-performance four-bay network attached storage (NAS), the WD My Cloud EX4. It is targeted at users who are looking for a reliable way to save, share, back up, stream and manage massive amounts of data.

The EX4 features an Easy-Slide-Drive technology for customers to easily install or hot-swap drives at any time. All they need to do is open the bay’s door and slide in the drive — there is no need for a screwdriver or toolkit. Customers can also attach external hard drives to the expansion ports (two available) to instantly expand the storage capacity.

The data on the NAS can be streamed to gaming consoles, smart TVs and media players, as long as they support DLNA/UPnP protocal. Additionally, it also has an FTP server for users to retrieve data and P2P tool for users to download torrents directly to the NAS.

Customers can also customise the NAS, monitor its health, manage access and energy saving features with the EX4 dashboard, as well as use a suite of third-party apps such as aMule, Icecast, Joomla!, phpBB, phpMyAdmin and SqueezeCenter.

Users can also installed the free WD My Cloud mobile app to view photos, stream video and manage files using their Android or iOS devices. The mobile app also integrates popular cloud services so that customers can easily transfer files from their Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive accounts.

Users can also use the NAS to back up all of their computers and devices with WD SmartWare Pro software for PC while Mac users can utilise all the features of Apple Time Machine backup software to protect their data.

The EX4 can also backup data to another EX4 in a different location, or to cloud services such as Amazon S3 and ElephantDrive.

To ensure 24/7 data protection and reliability the device also includes redundant power supplies and Ethernet ports. However, a second power adaptor must be purchased separately.

The EX4 without any hard drive goes for RM1,359. The 8TB, 12TB and 16TB models are priced at RM2,699, RM3,259 and RM3,999  respectively.
