The power behind the stick

TNB continues to play a leading role in nurturing young sporting talent, serving as a key catalyst for youth sports development.

MALAYSIA’s national utility company, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), has a long-standing commitment to powering the nation — a mission that extends far beyond providing electricity.

Recognising the vital role of sport in fostering social unity and developing resilient youth, TNB acts as a key strategic partner in Malaysian hockey’s future, most visibly through its flagship TNB Thunderbolts programme.

This commitment was recently reflected by the resounding success of the TNB Thunderbolts 2025 Six and Seven Hockey Championship, a dynamic grassroots tournament that cemented TNB’s role as the main catalyst for youth sports development.

Held on Nov 1 and 2 at the TNB Kelab Kilat field in Bangsar, the championship was a massive celebration of young talent.

It successfully gathered an incredible 133 teams and 1,197 participants from across the entire country, instantly positioning it as one of the largest grassroots hockey tournaments in Malaysia. This overwhelming participation not only highlights the enduring passion for the sport but also demonstrates the community’s high confidence in TNB’s development initiatives.

The engine of grassroots excellence

The core objective of the TNB Thunderbolts programme is to consistently invest in the grassroots through platforms that offer structured training, technical support, its adopted school programme and crucial competitive experience.

The Six and Seven Hockey Championship is the embodiment of this strategy, acting as a critical arena for young players to hone their skills, build self-confidence and gain tactical exposure in a real-game atmosphere. The event’s success reinforces TNB’s image as a national company that actively drives social progress and youth empowerment through sport.

Adding an invaluable layer of inspiration, the tournament’s opening was attended by former Olympians Nor Azlan Bakar and Madzli Ikmar, alongside 13 current national hockey players.

This direct interaction with sporting icons provided a powerful motivational boost for the aspiring athletes, allowing them to witness first-hand the level of discipline and excellence required for success.

This human touch is paramount to TNB’s development philosophy, ensuring that the players are nurtured holistically — technically, competitively and mentally.

Forging the pathway to national success

The Thunderbolts programme is specifically designed to create a clear and continuous pathway for talent development, linking school-level play directly to the national competitive stage.

The championship serves as a key platform for unearthing new talent at an early age. This structured continuity is strengthened by the participation of TNB’s adopted schools, which are powerhouse contenders in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

The tournament featured teams from TNB adopted schools, including Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI), SMK Seberang Temerloh (AHP-SSN) and SM Tinggi Melaka (SSN Predator) from MJHL Division 1, as well as SMK Pengkalan Permatang (PPHT) from Division 2.

Their involvement highlights the programme’s success in ensuring a robust talent pipeline, actively contributing to the next generation of national players.

The event also fostered stronger cooperation among schools, hockey academies and the wider sports community, collectively strengthening the overall hockey development ecosystem in the country.

Celebrating the champions of tomorrow

The competitive spirit over the two-day championship was electrifying, culminating in some fiercely contested finals. The sheer volume of matches, across four categories, allowed for two competitive streams: the Super Pool and the Premier Pool.

In the highly competitive Premier Pool, the coveted Under-18 titles were claimed by AH-SSN Pahang (Boys) and SSTMI Olympian Star (Girls) , defeating SSN Predator Boys A and PPHT Girls B respectively. In the Under-12 Premier Pool, ARHC Black (Boys) and Sakura A (Girls) clinched the top spots .

Meanwhile, in the Super Pool, the Under-18 champions were PPHT Cheetah (Boys) and KLTHA-Resistance (Girls) , while Kilat PDHC (Boys) and BER-1 Girls X (Girls) triumphed in the Under-12 categories . These victories are a testament to the talent and rigorous development that TNB’s initiative supports.

This success is not just measured in goals and trophies. Positive feedback from coaches and parents involved in the programme consistently highlights TNB’s deep commitment to quality athlete development and its continuous effort to strengthen the community relationship around the sport.

By focusing on technical skills, competitive exposure and moral motivation, TNB is generating the next cohort of national hockey players.

The TNB Thunderbolts 2025 Six and Seven Hockey Championship has once again proved that TNB’s commitment to Malaysia’s future is comprehensive — lighting up homes, powering industry and crucially, igniting the dreams of young sporting talent. This commitment on developing human potential is aimed at elevating Malaysia’s performance in international hockey.
