Go green and save

GET renewable energy sources like solar and hydropower to power homes and businesses while safeguarding the planet’s future.

The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) and Energy Commission have confirmed the continuation of the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme for 2025 onwards through Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) with several key improvements.

This initiative enables consumers and organisations to reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing electricity from renewable energy (RE) sources, such as solar and hydropower at a longer period of up to 3 years with lower premium cost.

The GET programme provides consumers with Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificate (mREC), which is backed by the international renewable energy certificate (I-REC(E)), annually as proof that their energy is sourced from local renewable sources such as large scale solar and large hydropower indirectly.

How the programme works

Subscribers will pay the standard electricity rates along with an additional premium for the GET programme.

One of the key improvements to the GET programme is extending the subscription periods, which range from one to three years, with longer commitments granting lower premiums.

Enrolment for the programme opened on March 1 at 11am and is available via TNB website and myTNB portal, which provides step-by-step instructions for easy registration.

The programme has a total quota of 6,600 GigaWatt-hours (GWh) for residential and business customers, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Backdating subscriptions to Jan 1 is permitted, and subscriptions are locked in until Dec 31 of the subscription period.

Power moves for businesses

The GET programme helps businesses integrate sustainability into their operations by offering green electricity solutions.

Businesses can subscribe for a minimum of 1,000 kWh based on their monthly electricity consumption to achieve their green target.

Standard electricity rates apply, along with an additional premium for the GET subscription. Premium rates decrease with longer subscription durations (one to three years).

Premium rates vary based on subscription duration, with lower rates for three-year commitments.

This enables businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, enhance environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices, and contribute to the renewable energy sector.

Since its inception in 2022, the GET programme has further boosted the country's energy transition by supporting the implementation of Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme (Solaris) to ramp up the adoption of solar energy amongst domestic customers.

As with residential subscribers, businesses must adhere to their chosen subscription period, with termination fees applicable for early cancellations.

Watts in it for you

Subscribers are exempted from Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) charges for the green energy consumption.

ICPT adjusts electricity rates based on fluctuations in fuel and generation costs, often leading to additional charges for consumers.

Under this programme, subscribers avoid ICPT charges for green energy, making it a stable and attractive option. The premium rates for 2025 are as follows:

a) Residential and low voltage non-residential consumers

> 10 sen/kWh (1 year)

> 9 sen/kWh (2 years)

> 8 sen/kWh (3 years).

b) Medium and high voltage non-residential consumers

> 20 sen/kWh (1 year)

> 19 sen/kWh (2 years)

> 18 sen/kWh (3 years)

Subscription charges are calculated based on subscribed blocks or actual usage, whichever is lower. Mid-billing period subscriptions will be prorated.

By subscribing to the GET programme, consumers actively support Malaysia’s renewable energy industry, contribute to global efforts against climate change and enjoy a greener, more sustainable energy future.

With Green Electricity Tariff, everyone can enjoy green energy in a single utility bill for a better, brighter tomorrow. For more info, visit www.tnb.com.my/get Register at myTNB portal to make the switch now.
